Frequently asked questions

Scalar says microphone access is denied. How do I fix it?

Tap Open Settings in Scalar, or go to Settings › Privacy & Security › Microphone on your iPhone, and turn on Scalar. Then return to the app and tap ▶ to start.

How accurate are the readings?

iPhone microphones are not certified measurement instruments, so treat readings as estimates. To improve accuracy, play a steady tone next to a reference sound level meter and adjust the calibration offset in Scalar's Settings until the two match.

What do A, C and Z weighting mean?

A-weighting approximates how loud sounds seem to people and is the usual choice for noise levels. C-weighting includes more low-frequency energy. Z-weighting applies no weighting at all. Changing the weighting starts a new measurement session.

The RTA says NC or NR needs more bass resolution.

Room ratings need the lowest octave bands. Open Settings in Scalar and raise the FFT size (8192 or higher works).

Where are my recordings?

Open Recordings from the … menu on the Meter tab to play, rename, share or delete them. They also appear in the Files app under On My iPhone › Scalar › Recordings (names you give recordings in Scalar show only in the app).

Can I export my measurements?

Yes. On the Meter tab, choose Export session CSV from the … menu to share the session's level history as a spreadsheet-friendly file.

Does Scalar send my audio anywhere?

No. Everything is processed on your iPhone, and Scalar does not collect any data. See our privacy policy.
